January 2008 Update

Greetings from Burlingame, California, where we should never complain about 48-degrees with showers and an overcast sky in January, but the weather today does gray in comparison to the memories of those perfectly warm and sunny days a few weeks ago in Jamaica, the Caymans and Mexico, as we sailed aboard the QCFA 2008 Arts Cruise. And even more warming than the weather was the camaraderie among the artists, performers, actors, attendees and speakers. Every one of the Art talks, demonstrations and performances turned out to be even better than any of us could have hoped for. We ran out of superlatives about half-way into the week, and when we had more than one person come up to us, in the middle of the cruise, and sincerely thank us for "the very best week of my entire life," it was a pretty good indication that we had managed to create a rare and remarkable thing — with thanks to all of our contributors and performers for helping make it so. There are more Arts Cruise responses, pictures and other information to share below, and news of a prestigious award won by QCFA sculptor Martin Eichinger, but first, here's more of what we're all here for, the Art — and most excellent Art it is....

The Letter
BRYAN LARSEN
45 limited-edition giclée prints on canvas
45" x 21"

Limited-edition signed and numbered giclee prints now available! See the step-by-step completion of this painting in the QCFA Artist's Studio... "This painting is another iteration on a theme I find myself coming back to quite often, the juxtaposition of a beautiful female figure on a concrete and glass architectural background. I really enjoy the contrast between the organic softness of the figure and the linear geometry of the structures. In this case, there is a girl lying on her stomach out on the ledge of a high concrete balcony overlooking the surrounding buildings. In one hand she holds a letter, the contents of which are left to the viewer’s imagination, and in the other a simple bouquet of flowers, presumably accompanying the letter. Beauty is the central idea of the composition: that of the flowers, the buildings and most importantly the figure, which the buildings are holding up and the flowers are a tribute to...." — Bryan Larsen

Precision
DAMON-A. H. DENYS
Oil on linen
30" x 24"

Visit the the step-by-step completion of this painting in the QCFA Artist's Studio, for an illuminating description of the artist's process and his conscious standard of selection for each element in the painting: "Some may at first think that an apple has no significance in regards to the theme, but if you’ve studied the long history of agriculture at all, you know that the big, juicy, flawless apple that you take for granted in the super market is actually the product of centuries of deliberate human selection, not to mention agricultural technological developments....

"With this in mind, the wine is a further refinement of the already very careful and precise process that gave us the humble modern grape. Fans of fine wines know very well how spectacularly precise that process can be, and how small deviations in the process can yield profound differences in the resulting product. And of course, a factory produced wine glass that is identical to hundreds and thousands of other glasses coming down the same assembly line is only possible by an amazing degree of precision in the technology and machines used to produce them. So although the elements in this corner are all meant to look very nice, they are also deliberate reiterations of the general theme and are meant also to give that simple act of the figure tuning his guitar that much more gravity." — Damon Denys

Noiseless Call
HAN WU SHEN
Oil on canvas
48" x 36"

In the countryside of China, many males leave home to work in the big cities for their family's living. The women and children must stay home in the poorer rural areas. Many of the men cannot return to their homes every year because of their jobs or lack of money. That is the story of this painting. She misses him. — Han Wu Shen

GALLERY NEWS

THE 2008 QCFA ARTS CRUISE — MEMORIES, EXTRAS

“The cruise and arts program was spectacular. Thanks to you and Quent for your vision and organization of a wonderful event. I was one of those first time cruisers of any kind and found it to be relaxing and something I would do again.” - Elaine Ring, TX.

“Thanks for the glorious cruise!! It was the kind of occasion that keeps you feeling fueled for days to come.” -Teresa Hermiz, OH

“Thanks again for everything. You and Quent created such a rich experience for us. The relaxation, the inspiration, the excitement of it all still lingers and makes even the mundane or chaotic aspects of normal life seem sweeter, now. Thank you!” - Charlotte Jarrett, FL

“I can't thank you and Quent enough for organizing the cruise. I absolutely had the time of my life. Seven perfect days in a row. Charlotte and I had been looking forward to the cruise for so long, I was starting to think that it couldn't possibly live up to the anticipation and excitement we had built up over it. I'm glad to say I was completely mistaken. The cruise completely surpassed my expectations.” - Brian English

There are more comments and some cruise photos on our News & Events page (Arts Cruise attendees are sharing hundreds of cruise photos and memories with each other on various sites on-line...).

In addition to her lectures on the cruise, Dr. Dianne Durante provided us with some delightful culinary notes for each of our ports of call. "Fearless Foreign Food" is now available on Dianne's website. She would enjoy any feedback.

Now on the Arts Cruise blog (see right-bar menu), as requested by arts-cruisers, Thomas Shoebotham has provided a list of the music from his lecture. Also on the cruise blog there is more information about our fearless travel agent for the cruise, the lovely and talented Jody Bolhuis of JB Travel Connections. Bryan Larsen's portrait demonstration was very popular as demonstrated by all of the requests that we have received to see the finished portrait of Ali. So without further ado we present Ali. For the many asking, the website for the Bechard Winery is here (now shipping to most states); our thanks to Ted Bechard for providing a very informative and entertaining wine-tasting for us on the cruise. Feel free to send an email to Ted & Andrea if you would enjoy being on their mailing list.

MONNA VANNA — A CRITICAL SUCCESS

QCFA's production of Maurice Maeterlinck's three-act classic play Monna Vanna was a critical success as it played Hollywood (Nov.-Dec.) and on the QCFA Arts Cruise. Reviews included:

"...an opportunity to see a fine and interesting example of rare work, charged with passionate and thoughtful performances." — Variety

"...what a play it is! Ripe with poetic language and performed by a superbly gifted cast, it is mesmerizing, breathtaking, and haunting." — Cynthia Citron, Santa Monica Daily Press

Our deepest thanks and appreciation go out to producer LizBeth Lucca, director Joel Marquez, the hard-working crew, and our fine cast: Christina Valo, Stephan Smith Collins, Bryant Romo, Robin Field, Joel Bryant, Daniel Jensen, William Greeley, Matt Frieberg and Emily Wing. Our Monna Vanna was an unforgettable experience.

EICHINGER WINS FIRST PLACE AT 2007 ARC INTERNATIONAL SALON

Portland, OR — Art Renewal Center announced the award winners of the 2007 International ARC Salon. Martin Eichinger's figurative sculpture Rapture received the honor of First Place in the Salon's Sculpture Category.

Held annually, the International ARC Salon draws over 1600 entries from around the globe. The competition highlights the best of contemporary realism, featuring timeless images that touch upon universal themes. ARC Salon is sponsored by the Art Renewal Center, whose online museum features the work of both present day artists and masters of the past. ARC promotes the return of training, standards, and excellence in the visual arts.

Cast in bronze as a limited edition of 100, the award-winning Rapture is one of many works making up Eichinger's popular Duet series. Culminating at the top of the sculpture is a couple whose histories are rooted in the swirling abstract column from which they emerge. Although positioned back to back, they embrace their passionate union while maintaining the individuality each brings to the relationship.

Rapture is Eichinger's best-selling Duet sculpture and is fast approaching sold-out status. Quent Cordair Fine art has one 34" casting. Eichinger's 7-foot tall enlargement of Rapture is limited to an edition of 20, all of which have sold; only one artist proof remains available.

DANIELLE ANJOU EXHIBITS AT THE LOUVRE

We are pleased to announce that Danielle Anjou's The Diver was recently accepted for a show at the Louvre. The sculpture was on display at the Societe Nationale Des Beaux Arts show, December 13-16, 2007. Ms. Anjou was chosen as part the first American Delegation ever to represent the United States in the prestigious Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (SNBA) exhibit at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, France. This is a unique honor, as America has never been represented in the hundred plus years the SNBA has been in existence. Danielle was among nine painters and three sculptors representing the United States.
