I lived for a time in Regina, Saskatchewan, where I was impressed by the awe-inspiring expanse of the Canadian prairies. At night the horizon twinkled with the lights of far-away farms, as though they were shining islands out in a great open sea. The Island grew out of this experience.
The figures are based upon detailed research into the history of the North-West Mounted Police, the precursors to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, from the late nineteenth century. The Island captures a private moment between a N.W.M.P. patrolman and a rancher's daughter out on a jaunt in the Cypress Hills in the early 1890's. The work embodies serene joy in a benevolent world.
