The Michelangelo portrait bust is based upon research of other portraits of the Master. The two major sources were from live sittings: J. del Conte's painting from c. 1535 and Leone Lioni's medallion from 1561. The Shaw portrait bust is based upon the bone structure evident in these two primary sources.
This work captures Michelangelo in his early forties and during a moment when he is viewing his own achievement. By conveying the Master proudly eyeing his handiwork, this portrait celebrates the most distinctive quality of Michelangelo: a heightened awareness of what he observed combined with an unyielding determination to give his view of the world physical form.
The Shaw portrait defies other works that portray the Master as troubled and psychologiacally undercut. This portrait declares that the Michelangelo who carved the David was an intensely proud man utterly involved, and in love, with his vocation of revering Man on earth.
