The Girl with a Gazing Ball: This figure is based on experiments of pose with the model, using a large reflective Christmas ball as a prop. The gazing ball is a 19th-century fixture used in outdoor gardens. They reflected the surrounding landscape. I thought of the gazing ball used to reflect the self. The model enjoyed this pose, not just due to the ease of reclining, but she found it pleasing to gaze at her own reflection. The flowing directions of her body and hair suggest calm repose, while the uplifted gazing ball interrupts the landscape of the figure. The fact that it is modelled fully in the round invites viewing of the back, so I mounted her above the base. This elevated mounting also suggests a sense of detachment from the external and heightens our sense that her action is one of introspection. I enjoy this piece on a mirrored surface which shows off the back beautifully. She should be viewed from above, so a low placement, even on a table, is best for her.
