Another slice of the delectable fruit treasured by American gods and goddesses, young and old. Many a slice was enjoyed down to the rind on my grandparents' farm in the Illinois heartland, as we sat on the porch swing hung between the shade trees, taking a respite from snapping beans, shucking corn, hand cranking the ice-cream maker or playing in the hay loft — endless days of endless summers.
