Giclée (jhee-clay) - Derived from the french verb “gicler,” meaning “to squirt.”
A giclée print is an individually produced, high-resolution reproduction created from a digital scan of the artwork. These high-quality reproductions are printed by a special large-format printer using archival quality inks on canvas or fine-art paper. The technique and materials used result in the highest quality detail, sharpness and color, reflecting that of the original art.
The giclée printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. Unlike lithography, which uses tiny dots of four colors, giclée prints are created using professional 8-color to 12-color ink-jet printers utilizing lightfast (fade resistant) inks and finer, more numerous, replaceable print heads resulting in a wider color gamut. The ink is sprayed onto the canvas, mixing the color to create truer shades and hues. Research indicates that high-quality giclée prints will last up to 100 years or more without significant fade, if kept out of direct, or strongly indirect sunlight.
