There were three stages to man's conceptual evolution. First, the development of sounds into speech. Second, the visual expression of his values. And third, greatest of all, his invention of audio-visual symbols to express his ideas.

Sylvia Bokor considers the visual concretes in The Greatest Invention adequate to convey her theme. In this regard, it is not the content of the writing but that man invented writing that's important here.

However, it was impossible to do the painting without giving some meaning to the symbols she used. She researched various alphabets of early Man and composed content for two of the texts, the cuneiform and the hieroglyphics. The Sumerian is a quote from an ancient text; the Latin is a quote from Dante's Divine Comedy. The meaning of the text in all cases is not germane to the theme of the painting.
